Woody Allen ha rilasciato al Guardian una meravigliosa intervista in occasione dell’uscita di “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” in Inghilterra.
And in recent YouTube footage I’ve watched of him, he seems to hide behind his glasses, appears, almost, to have no emotional engagement. So it’s a surprise and a delight to see that he does smile. And he does joke. What’s more, there’s still a twinkle, the old twinkle, so familiar from Annie Hall and Hannah and Her Sisters, and the other golden age Woody Allen movies. It’s still there. What I’m not sure is there – or at least if it is there, it’s clamped down under a thick layer of slick sentences and smoothly articulated words – is Woody Allen.

E’ uscito per la ISBN edizioni un bellissimo e voluminoso libro ricco di fumetti che come protagonista hanno Woody Allen. Non l’ho ancora acquistato ma ho passato alcuni minuti a sfogliarlo presso la Feltrinelli dove mi trovato quando l’ho adocchiato per la prima volta: merita sicuramente l’acquisto.
Nel 1976 il disegnatore Stuart Hample chiede a Woody Allen, già famosissimo, il permesso di trasformarlo nel protagonista della sua prossima striscia. Allen non solo accetta, ma prende a cuore il progetto e collabora con Hample a ogni vignetta pretendendo riunioni settimanali, mettendogli a disposizione la sua sterminata produzione di gag illuminanti e paradossali, inventandone altre sul momento. Nasce così La vita secondo Woody Allen, che proseguirà con successo sui quotidiani di tutti gli Stati Uniti fino al 1984. Un tesoro che descrive l’universo geniale e schizoide di Allan Stewart Königsberg, in arte Woody Allen, e offre uno sguardo mai visto prima sul regista-scrittore-drammaturgo-musicista newyorkese. Woody Allen: ‘At a certain age you conclude that greatness is not in you’
In the chilly hush of a grand building on New York’s Upper East Side lies Narnia of a sort: Woody Allen HQ, a windowless bunker where for the past 30 years the director has cast, edited and test-screened his films. There are cabinets down one side (containing the music on 33rpm vinyl he uses in his movies). A projection booth is concealed at one end of the room, a large white screen at the other.
Allen enters, in white shirt and khaki trousers. He looks younger than the characters he played on screen more than a decade ago, his hair tidy, parted and sandy brown. It’s only when he says “Let me put in my hearing aid so I can hear you” that you remember he is 74.
